Norway Northern Lights Cruise
November 4 - 13, 2013

The northern lights cruise will take you 69-degrees north near the Norway/Russia border to Kirkenes and will end in the Hanseatic town of Bergen where you will enjoy sightseeing and a night. Join Astronomy magazine along the Norwegian coast for ample dark sky and nightly aurora hunting aboard the ms MIDNATSOL. Astronomy magazine associate editor, Karri Ferron, will be the lecturer.

Itinerary:
Monday/Tuesday, November 4/5, 2013 • USA – Oslo, Norway
Depart for Norway with an overnight flight to Oslo. Upon arrival in Oslo, transfer to hotel for overnight.
Wednesday, November 6, 2013 • Oslo – Kirkenes, Norway
Return to Oslo airport for your short flight to Kirkenes. Upon arrival in Kirkenes, transfer to hotel.
An optional Dog Sled ride is available while searching for the northern lights tonight or perhaps take the Giant Crab excursion.   
Thursday, November 7, 2013 • Kirkenes - Vardo - Batsfjord - Berlevag
After breakfast transfer to the ms MIDNATSOL and sail south to Bergen.

Crossing Varangerfjord, Norway’s only east-facing fjord and fabled bird-watching site, you’ll arrive in Vardo. Next the MIDNATSOL will round the Varanger peninsula, where archaeologists excavated a community believed to date from 9000 BC. The ship calls at Batsfjord, which also boasts the remains of a Stone Age settlement, and Berlevag. Look for the Tanahorn Mountain, which long ago was a Sami sacrifice site.   
Friday, November 8, 2013 • Kjollefjord, Honningsvag – Hammerfest – Tromso
The astronomical program begins today. Come and hear about the aurora borealis and learn some photography tips. As you continue southward this morning the ship will call at Hammerfest, the world’s northernmost town of more than 5,000 people. Tonight be on deck in search of the green curtains of the aurora. Continuing southward this morning the ship will call at Hammerfest, the world’s northernmost town of more than 5,000 people.
Tonight in Tromso the search for the green curtains of the aurora will continue.

Saturday, November 9, 2013 • Harstad – Sortland – Stokmarknes – Svolvaer – Stamsund
The archipelagos of Lofoten and Vesteralen have some of the most stunning scenery on this journey. The ship will negotiate the narrow Raftsund Strait leading into the breathtaking Trollfjord before arriving in Svolvaer and Stamsund. The ship heads east across Vestfjord toward Bodo. Join your astronomy leader on deck for aurora watching later tonight.
Sunday, November 10, 2013 • Cross the Arctic Circle and Seven Sisters Boda, Ornes – Nesna – Sandnessjoen – Bronnoysund – Rorvik
Enjoy a spectacular winter scenery of the picturesque Helgeland coast with its myriad islets and steep granite walls. Cross the Arctic Circle and sail past the peaks of Seven Sisters as we enter the world of folklore and legend.

Monday, November 11, 2013 • Trondheim – Kristiansund – Molde
Today explore the beautiful city of Trondheim, the Viking capital with its Nidaros Cathedral, where three Queens and seven Kings have been crowned. The Nidaros is Scandinavia’s largest medieval building. Take a photo opportunity as you cruise to Kristiansund for the snow covered peaks of the Romsdal Alps. One more night in search of the Northern Lights before reaching Bergen.
Tuesday, November 12, 2013 • Torvik – Maloy – Floro – Bergen
Sail through the spectacular west Norway scenery, holly trees on Svanoy, the mouth of Sognefjord, and the archipelago on the approach to Bergen.
Wednesday, November 13, 2013 • Bergen - Homeward
Transfer to the airport for your flight homeward.
