Lured by patriotism and a better life, pioneers and adventurers lashed down the covered wagons and headed to the Pacific Northwest. Explorers Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and their Indigenous American guide, Sacajawea, cruised the Columbia River and marked the beauty of this new land. On August 19 - 26, 2017 Columbia River Total Eclipse Cruise astronomers will ply this route, roundtrip from Portland, Oregon, aboard an 88-guest replica coastal steamer. On August 21st eclipse day, we will disembark and travel south to the eclipse path for viewing.
Experience Norway’s auroral oval as you cruise aboard the newly refurbished Expedition ship MS Nordnorge north from Bergen to Kirkenes and return to Tromso for two nights northern lights hunt. Nowhere on earth is there a place more suitable for powerful astronomical ground-based observatories than Chile. The dry air of the Atacama Desert and the flat land and high mountains offer the perfect place for building these giant telescopes. Here is the center of the galaxy with the Milky Way so distinct it looks like a gossamer ribbon weaving its way past the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, the Southern Cross and in 2019 the total eclipse of the Sun.
